NAME:
Eng. Fischer's Lovebird, Fischer Love Bird, Fisher Lovebird
Lat. Agapornis Fischert
ORIGIN: Northern Tanzania from the southern shores of Lake Victoria, areas
of the Serengeti and Arusha National Park. The southern part of
Rwanda and Burundi. Colonies of these parrots are settled in Tanzania
and Kenya as well as in parts of Mombasa and Kenya.

PHYSICAL
APPEARENCE: Fisher Lovebird is 15 cm (6 in) in size and belong to a
class of small– medium parrots. Their basic color is green.
The front part of the head, cheeks, the part below the bill and
the front part of the neck are orange-red. Lores and back of head
are olive-orange. Upper breast and neck are orange-yellow. The sides
of the body, abdomen and under-tail feathers are yellowish-green.
The rump is bright blue and the under-wing coverts are blue and
green. The tail is green with yellow edgings. The periophthalmic
ring is white and the bill is red. Their feet are grey. Their sex
is not easily distinguishable, but females are larger with a smaller
and rounder head.
KEEPING AND CARE OF FISHERS: These very active medium-noisy parrots can be kept in pairs
or separately. They belong to a class of small-medium parrots. They
are friendly and they stay active all day long. It is recommended
to get as young a bird as possible for easier taming. It is also
much easier to tame the birds when they are kept separately. The
medium-sized cage will be adequate for one bird or one pair. The
cage has to provide enough rungs so the bird can move freely. Fisher's
Lovebirds love bathing, as do other birds belonging to the same
family, so one has to provide them bathing at least twice a week.
DIET: Mixture for these parrots consists of : mixed sunflower seeds in
the largest percentage, millet, canary grass seed, shelled oats,
hemp, sorghum, flax, black seeds and saffron seeds.
Minearals and cuttle-bone are essential for their nutrition and
should always be available. As fruits and vegetables are their favourite
foods, they should be offered every other day.
Apples, carrots, blade, and chicory are also among their favourite
foods.
BREEDING FISCHER LOVEBIRD: These birds are popular in aviaries of breeders or
beginners due to their mild nature and simplicity of breeding. An
aviary of 1.5 m3 (52 square ft.) is suitable if one wants to breed
no more than three pairs of Fischers. Their sensitivity to cold
temperatures is characteristic of all species within this family.
Minimal temperature for adult birds is 10C (50F) while young birds
should not be kept in less than 15C (60F). If one decides to put
them outside during the winter, it is important to leave them nests
so the birds may find some shelter. In the rooms with controlled temperatures,
breeding lasts during the entire year.
During breeding season, birds
should be provided with enough material to build a nest. Branches
of willow are the most suitable as they provide the humidity needed
for normal hatching of offspring. The nest of 18 cm (7 in) width
and length and 20 cm (8 in) in height may be entangled with willow
branches so that even humans cannot approach the bird. The female
usually clutches 3 to 6 eggs. Incubation lasts 20 days.

Fischer lovebird eggs with baby birds. Branches
of willow are the most suitable as they provide the humidity needed
for normal hatching |
After 45
days, the young are independent and can be separated from their
parents. They stay up to 35 days after birth in the nest. Over the
next ten days, the process of separation takes place. The necessary
amount of minerals will prevent cannibalism. More than three broods
a year is not recommended as to save the birds from unnecessary
exhaustion.
INTERESTING
FACTS: Fischer Love birds are frequently inhabitants of domestic houses
and breeding sanctuaries.
Due to their great variety of colors (mutation), which are about
ten, they can be blue, cobalt, lutino, albino, etc.
In nature, they are green. Fischer's lifespan is about 15 years. The imitation
of speech is not one of their characteristics, but they can be tamed
very easily.
